A sofa looks perfect on screen, arrives on a Tuesday, and gets stuck halfway up the stairwell. A dresser fits the wall exactly and then the drawers hit the bed frame. A dining table slots into the room and nobody can pull a chair out.
None of these are furniture problems. They are measuring problems, and every one of them is avoidable in about twenty minutes with a tape measure.

How Do You Measure a Room for Furniture?
Measure the room’s length and width wall to wall at floor level, then measure ceiling height. Step 1: Sketch the Room Before You Measure Anything

How To Check Whether Furniture Will Fit
The fit formula
Usable wall span − furniture width = leftover
Aim for at least 6 inches of leftover, and ideally 12 or more. Filling a wall exactly makes the piece look wedged in, makes cleaning behind it impossible, and leaves no margin for a wall that is 1/2 inch out of square.

Two rules that override the table:
Never block a doorway path. The line from a doorway into the room needs its full 36 inches even if that means a smaller sofa.
Rugs need margin too. Leave 18–24 inches of exposed floor between the rug edge and the walls in an average room. In a small room, 8–12 inches reads better than a rug that runs wall to wall.
Room-by-Room Minimums
Before shopping, check that the room can physically support what you want.
