Four rules that matter
Never skip more than one grit. Jumping from 80 straight to 220 doesn’t remove the 80-grit scratches. It just polishes around them, and they reappear the second stain hits the wood. Each grit’s only job is erasing the marks from the grit before it.
Don’t sand past 220 before staining. Fine sanding burnishes the pores closed. The wood stops absorbing stain, and you get a pale, patchy color.
